University of Queensland
The Advanced Engineering Building (AEB) enhances The University of Queensland’s (UQ) ability to deliver practical active-learning styles for engineering students, and maximise global research opportunities enabling UQ to respond to major shifts in the world economy and global marketplace for innovative engineering solutions.
The AEB houses the state-of-the-art GHD Auditorium – a 500 seat lecture theatre supported by large-span timber trusses from mixed hardwoods grown in the Maryborough region – as well as active learning laboratories and student spaces, and contemporary research facilities to support global engineering research centres.
The AEB is also a unique facility designed to interact with the natural environment, dramatically reduce energy consumption and create an interactive learning environment for students, as it will be instrumented and monitored in real-time, allowing interaction and experimentation on the features of the building by students.
The Advanced Engineering Building is - literally - a living laboratory. The building has been designed and constructed to achieve certified 5 Star Green ratings representing “Australian Excellence” in environmental initiatives.
Every detail down to the building’s materials, exterior fabric, mechanical services, lighting and electrical efficiencies, hydraulics, transport, operations, waste and emissions have been carefully considered to hit key energy targets.
Energy and water consumption, waste and indoor environment quality is constantly monitored to ensure energy targets and benchmarks are continuously met. Visitors to the building can view the data in real time via the interactive displays screens located on each level.
Improvements on standard practice energy efficiency to achieve a 5 Star Green Rating includes such features as:
Thermal labyrinth to store cool overnight
Phase change material to provide tempered air for the air-conditioning
Solar shading
High performance double glazing
Mixed-mode operation so air-conditioning is only required during extreme condition
Openable louvres and windows with cross-flow via the atrium
High efficiency water-cooled chillers
VSD fans and pumps
The GHD Auditorium will change the way the University presents lectures to students, transform the student learning experience, and offer opportunities for conferences and exhibitions, expanding its accessibility to the wider community.
The GHD Auditorium is the largest auditorium at The University of Queensland with the capacity to seat over 500 people. It is arguably the most visible feature of the AEB, well supported by foyers and public spaces with spectacular views across the University lakes.
