Beam Off-Cuts Help Patients with Dementia

Hyne Timber beam off-cuts have been keeping the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild busy, supplying impressive engagement resources for patients being treated at the Acute Restorative Care (ARC) unit at Nambour Hospital, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Wooden items include a complete Finska set as well as Finska kits which patients who want to get involved, can put together themselves.

Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe said the items were being used by patients with complex cognitive issues, including those with dementia.

“The workmanship was beyond our expectations and we are so grateful to Hyne Timber and the Guild for turning this idea of donating wooden items to engage patients into a reality,” Ms Rowe said.

The Guild are continuing to make other items from the donated beam off-cuts including work benches for patients to do their own wood craft.

Finska Kit for Dementia Patients to Finish

The Sunshine Coast University Hospital has also requested wooden items to assist their patients having seen the positive impact on patients at Nambour.

Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild Secretary, John Muller said members enjoyed working on quality wooden items that support the community in some way,

“We have over 220 members now and the Guild is a great way for people to stay connected, learn new skills and contribute to the community.

“Wishlist and the staff at the Hospital have been great to partner with and we are pleased the wooden items which we continue to make, are having a positive impact on patients’ lives.

“We wouldn’t be able to make them if we didn’t have a steady donation of timber including the beam off-cuts we are able to source from Hyne Timber’s Kunda Park Distribution Warehouse.” Mr Muller said.

Hyne Timber manufacture their beams from locally grown and milled plantation pine at their Glue Laminated Timber plant in Maryborough, Queensland.

Standard lengths are freighted to the Sunshine Coast where they can be docked on site to suit specific customer needs. This results in short off-cut ‘waste’ which can be put to good use by others such as the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild and various Men’s Sheds.
